Ammo Cans
I picked up several surplus ammo cans and would like to know if any of you guys are using them. I have amassed a great deal of ammunition in the past few months and would like to know specifically if anyone is storing ammo loose in these cans. I would really like to maximize my can capacity - anybody got any pros/cons to storing ammo loose in these cans?

Re: Ammo Cans
You might want to just do a search on ammo storage or shelf life of ammo or something like that. I did that awhile ago trying to figure out why some of my old .22 LR (20-25yrs.) wouldn't fire.
I remember a couple of sites saying you shouldn't store ammo loose where metal touches metal, but I can't remember the rationale, and I sure can't speak to the validity of that rationale. I've got a few boxes/cans of bulk myself, and I just hope it goes "Bang!" when I need it. |
Re: Ammo Cans
I store ammo in GI cans whenever possible and in the original factory boxes. If you ever go to sell it, people will want it in the original box.

Re: Ammo Cans
I put one of these in each can with the ammo:
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...eitemid=799452 One of the cans I went into the indcator was changing after a few months, not others. Think that some of the gaskets aren't in great shape. The desiccant can be recharged in the oven. I think I'll put something on the gasket to see if I can get a better seal. The expensive ammo I sealed in vacuum bags, 1 or 2 boxes per bag. I remove the extra air without creating any vacuum when I sealed it. |
Re: Ammo Cans
I've heard the original boxes have some sort of special coating or something. I just store them in the ammo cans with the original boxes. I'm not too worried about humidity here. The air is so dry that nose bleeds are common.
